In the next few weeks, we will begin the season of Lent. Growing up Catholic and attending Catholic school, I can remember the big conversation around this time of year was always, "What are you giving up for Lent?" As we go through these forty days, it is this small sacrifice of something we love that helps keep the perspective of Jesus's most perfect sacrifice.
We all know that famous verse in the gospel of John:
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. ~John 3:16
I don't know about you, but I don't think I could give up my son for the greater good of humanity. That's, like, A LOT to ask. I definitely wouldn't ask my son to die for people that weren't even born yet. But those two things are exactly what God did.
And, guys. Jesus said okay!!
His love for us is the very definition of unconditional. He chose to die so that we could live forever in heaven.
That. Is. Bananas.
So what can we do in return? Well, love Him back, for starters. Our love will never come close to the amount of love He has for us, but we can sure as heck try. We can praise God. We can give up Facebook or our daily cup of coffee for a mere forty days because those things are so small in comparison to giving up our lives.
I want us to start February - and Lent - with the unwavering certainty that we are loved by our Creator and by His son, Jesus. Let's use this playlist throughout the month to remind us of that fact. Let's listen to the beautiful music and meditate on God's love. Let's sing our praises along with the musicians. Let's spend every second proving to God that we are faithful and deserving of His love.
